Announcing a New High Current, Low Voltage Motor Release

September 19, 2012

Groschopp Inc. announces the release of a new high current, low voltage PM8000 DC motor (80 millimeter housing diameter).

High Current Motor Brush Card Design New features inside and outside the motor optimize the design for rugged, high current demands and allow the motor to withstand the high temperatures associated with extended stalls.

Internal Features

On the inside, the design features a new high current brush card assembly, built to better withstand high temperatures associated with extended stall durations without any ill effects. The assembly features high current brush holders, constructed from stamped brass. They are riveted to a rigid, molded thermo-set plastic brush card that will not melt or deform during peak stall currents up to 125 amps. The brass brush holders are designed with two symmetrical mounting posts designed to accept constant pressure from coil wrap brush springs. Coil wrap springs have more constant force over their length of travel, giving the motor a longer brush life. Other accessories, such as electro-magnetic armature brake, can be added to the motor and terminated to the mounting posts which serve a dual purpose as threaded connection points.

External Features

On the outside, the end bell casting is identical to Groschopp’s standard DC motor line. As a standard configuration, the motor is designed to have flying power leads exiting the side of the motor. Another configuration of the end bell is designed to have large, high current input terminals mounted directly through the end bell. With the ability to accept up to six gauge ring terminals, these “stud” connectors are made of ¼-20 brass bolts for anti-corrosion protection and high current handling. The studs are insulated and sealed to the end bell to maintain an IP66 ingress protection rating. Additionally, the studs have stand-offs on the rear of the end bell design to accept rubber boots, keeping the connection secure and protected from the elements.

The new design results in less IR loss (ie. voltage drop) through the inputs and brush card, creating a higher power, more efficient motor. The high current, low voltage motor’s waterproof, rugged design and ability to handle repeated stalls creates an ideal package for automotive, agriculture and construction applications.

How to use the Motor Search Tool

Narrow your search by selecting motor type, gearbox, voltage, and phase options for your desired motor.

Select a dominant variable: choose one of the three parameters to narrow your search. The selected variable determines which slider bar you will be able to manually move.

Use the slider corresponding to your dominant variable to further narrow your motor selection. The other sliders will automatically move to show available ranges based on the range of your selected variable.

Results will upload as your search criteria changes. If you have any questions regarding your results or how to use the search tool, you can chat with us using the green tab on the left-hand side of your screen.

Note: Groschopp Universal motors are custom built to fit your application so no additional options are available to narrow the search. Selecting the Universal motor type will prompt a message taking you to the Universal product page.
