When to Use a Brush Card or Brush Holders

Brush card vs. brush holder

Groschopp DC motor model PM60 and PM80 frames have either a brush card or replaceable brush holders inside of them, but knowing the difference between the two could make a world of difference for your application.

The brush card and brush holders generally do the same thing in that they transmit power to a DC motor by passing voltage and current to the armature. The life of the brush itself will last depending on the amount of friction and speed that comes from the armature. Brushes have a certain amount of life before they need to be replaced, which can be easily done with brush holders, but not so much with a brush card.dc motor brushes brush holder, fractional hp motors, hp manufacturer, gear motor

When using a DC motor, brush holders are a good choice for drier areas that don’t come into contact with a lot of
liquids, especially water. They can be easily purchased and replaced by the user and are generally cheaper than a brush card.

Brush cards are sealed inside of the motor, which makes the brushes better protected from environmental situations that could easily cause damage to and performance of the brush itself. Brush cards can also be designed for higher temperature and higher current applications to get the best performance out of your application. When brush life fails in a brush card, the whole motor will need to be removed from the application and sent back to us to replace the brush card, and sometimes the whole motor will need to be replaced depending on how many hours have been put into it already.

How to use the Motor Search Tool

Narrow your search by selecting motor type, gearbox, voltage, and phase options for your desired motor.

Select a dominant variable: choose one of the three parameters to narrow your search. The selected variable determines which slider bar you will be able to manually move.

Use the slider corresponding to your dominant variable to further narrow your motor selection. The other sliders will automatically move to show available ranges based on the range of your selected variable.

Results will upload as your search criteria changes. If you have any questions regarding your results or how to use the search tool, you can chat with us using the green tab on the left-hand side of your screen.

Note: Groschopp Universal motors are custom built to fit your application so no additional options are available to narrow the search. Selecting the Universal motor type will prompt a message taking you to the Universal product page.
