Brushless DC Motors
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors work well for many applications. Generally, a smaller motor can be specified due to high efficiencies and the increased power density of the BLDC motor. Due to the lack of wear components (excluding bearings), the BLDC motor is considered to be a high reliability motor with a life of 20,000 hours. The performance is similar to a Permanent Magnet brush-type motor in that the speed is proportional with voltage and the torque is proportional with current. BLDC motors also have a high starting/stall torque when compared to an AC Induction motor. Brushless DC motors work well with gearboxes, and can be used in variable speed and intermittent duty applications. A motor control is required for the BLDC motor perform the commutation also allowing for customized motor performance with the proper choice of an application specific control.
