The Importance of Motor Outline Prints
When a designer begins searching for a fractional horsepower motor he starts with the power and torque specifications. Once he’s found a couple of motor options he needs to determine whether any of the motors he’s found will physically fit into his application.
It’s important for motor manufactures to supply basic motor outline prints to give customers basic size dimensions for each of their motor/gearmotor frame sizes. Used in conjunction with performance specifications, outline prints will help streamline the motor selection process.
Once a gearmotor is selected, the next step is to work with the manufacturer to create an application outline print with all the special or critical features to a particular application, such as, bolt pattern, output shaft size, lead wire/connector configurations, pilot size, etc. Also, it’s typical for notes to be added to the print to define features that can’t be dimensioned, like insulation class, thermal protection, IP rating, and operation temperature range, to name a few.
Finally, after all the special requirements have been depicted on the print and are tolerenced per the designer’s requirements, the designer gives his approval and the design can move forward.
Outline prints enable the designer and the motor manufacturer to communicate clearly and save time and money. Be sure that your motor manufacturer provides you with clear outline prints during each step of the design process to help you avoid multiple motor samples that don’t fit your design.
