Groschopp worked with a manufacturer to create an automated system for moving heavy prison doors (weighing anywhere from 200-1200 lbs each). For this application, tight installation using a right angle reducer and the smallest possible motor was important. Because the prison doors would only be operating intermittently, Groschopp was able to use a smaller—and less expensive—PMDC motor. This infrequent operating also meant a heat sink wasn’t an essential part of the gearbox.
The DC motor matched with the 5:1 ratio right angle gearbox was able to meet the high torque and smooth operation requirements of the manufacturer. It was also important for the motor to be back-drivable so it could be manually operated in the event of a power outage. Groschopp tested 1.6 million cycles without failure to make sure this design would be a reliable solution for the manufacturer and end customers.
