When there are misunderstandings or problems between a customer and a supplier (or in any relationship for that matter) it is due to a lack of communication. Having a clear idea about the expectations of someone else is one of the most important aspects of any relationship. Many times companies operate on assumptions when attempting to meet the expectations of a customer. Communication is paramount when explaining specific standards and instructions. Clearly articulating these expectations helps create a level of understanding and establishes mutually beneficial relationships. This is frequently achieved with written documentation which may include a Supplier Quality Manual (SQM).

What is a Supplier Quality Manual?
An SQM is developed to promote continuous improvement by clearly communicating a company’s expectations and requirements for its suppliers of materials and services. It also helps ensure that a professional and satisfactory exchange is achieved among all parties on all issues. The implementation of an SQM assists suppliers in the development of their business and manufacturing processes, to enhance future competitiveness and success. It also provides a means to communicate customer requirements and a summary of how that specific company conducts business. The SQM is a document that is continually updated to meet the expectations of a growing company.
An SQM establishes general product assurance requirements and is intended to define the minimum requirements for a Supplier to assure that all goods and services delivered to a customer conform to specified requirements for quality. SQM’s are used in conjunction with the current blueprint, purchase order, terms and conditions, etc. to help ensure that the supplied components are delivered to meet specifications on time, every time.
