Planetary Stand Alone Gearbox

September 8, 2011

planetary gearbox optionsGroschopp Inc. offers stand-alone planetary reducers. Planetary reducers are characterized by high torque ratios. Groschopp has developed a planetary gearbox that uses a “floating” sun gear. The reducer consists of a ring gear around three planetary gears and a floating sun gear. Unlike the other planetary gears, which are fixed in place, the sun gear has a toothed central spline loosely fitted onto the shaft spline, floating the sun gear. A major advantage to the floating sun gear is the lower decibel level, less noise. When the sun gear is clamped to the motor shaft it’s fixed solidly, leading to “rattle” if tolerances vary at all. Thus, it is easy to tell if the gearbox is out of tolerance, also letting you know if the load is distributed evenly between the gears. The quiet operation proves the reducer is functioning properly. Groschopp’s planetary gearbox runs quietly compared to competitors and even the other Groschopp gearboxes. Floating the sun gear also keeps the gears centered and reduces gear tooth damage.

The planetary reducer has a standard mounting configuring allowing it to mount to virtually any motor with a NEMA 23 and 34 input flange. It is available in a standard or a rugged design intended to withstand less than ideal conditions such as extreme heat, cold, dust and moisture. The standard design contains powdered metal gears, whereas the rugged design incorporates steel gears. Groschopp offers several types of lubrications to serve in a variety of environments.

The sealed gearbox has a compact package but has a “nose in” option. Essentially, this is created by reversing the endbell in order to shrink the package size giving the Planetary gearbox flexibility in design (There is a right angle add-on to create an optional Right Angle Planetary).

The planetary reducers are available in a 7300, frame size options 5:1–377:1.

How to use the Motor Search Tool

Narrow your search by selecting motor type, gearbox, voltage, and phase options for your desired motor.

Select a dominant variable: choose one of the three parameters to narrow your search. The selected variable determines which slider bar you will be able to manually move.

Use the slider corresponding to your dominant variable to further narrow your motor selection. The other sliders will automatically move to show available ranges based on the range of your selected variable.

Results will upload as your search criteria changes. If you have any questions regarding your results or how to use the search tool, you can chat with us using the green tab on the left-hand side of your screen.

Note: Groschopp Universal motors are custom built to fit your application so no additional options are available to narrow the search. Selecting the Universal motor type will prompt a message taking you to the Universal product page.
